Probiotics

11.14.22

From 2001, the FAO/WHO definition of a probiotic is: “live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host.”

In 2013 an expert panel convened by the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) revisited and reinforced this definition as “relevant and sufficiently accommodating for current and anticipated applications.” The group recommended a minor grammatical change: “live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.”

For labeling, the scientific consensus has been to use CFU (colony forming units) as the unit of measure for probiotic amounts.
