Digexin, an ingredient developed by NXT USA, received the Ingredient Idol award at SupplySide West in the microbiome category. The award recognized research evidencing the botanical ingredient’s ability to improve digestive and mood health.
“This year’s show was terrific, with great turnout from around the world,” said Eric Anderson, managing director of NXT USA. “We had significant interest in Digexin not only for the clinically verified benefits of regularity but also for the mood support offered by the unique, proprietary herbal blend. Digexin supports serotonin production, which works to improve mood, while promoting the speed of digestion, resulting in people feeling more physically and emotionally comfortable.”
The complex of okra and ashwagandha extracts has been the focus of two clinical studies, one of which was published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology in September.
The authors of this study noted the role of constipation in limiting social activities and reducing overall physical and mental wellbeing. “The present randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of a proprietary blend of standardized extracts of Withania somnifera root and Abelmoschus esculentus fruit extracts in relieving constipation and improving quality of life in adults,” they concluded.
A second clinical trial, which hasn’t yet been published, provided further validation that Digexin can improve overall digestive comfort and mood, noted Anderson, and also provided evidence that the supplement could improve speed of transit.
“After eating a muffin with a special blue dye, study participants noted that transit time was nearly four hours faster in the Digexin group versus the placebo group,” he said..
In both trials, Digexin relieved constipation and associated symptoms like gastrointestinal function, bowel clearance, stress, sleep, and self-reported quality of life.
