Botanical Blend Linked to Skin Health Benefits

Supplementing with Monteloeder’s Eternalyoung for 12 weeks was linked to improvements in several measures of skin appearance and function.

Botanical Blend Linked to Skin Health Benefits
    04.11.23
Supplementing with a complex of four botanicals branded as Eternalyoung by Monteloeder was linked to improvements in the appearance and function of skin, in a new clinical study published in Cosmetics.

The ingredient, which combines extracts of pomegranate, sweet orange, desert ginseng, and gotu kola, is notable for its high polyphenol content, and is formulated for beauty-from-within supplements.

The study, led by Vincenzo Nobile, PhD, was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in which 60 women between the ages of 35 and 69 supplemented with either a placebo or 225 mg of the ingredient daily for a period of 12 weeks.

Researchers analyzed several parameters of skin health with standard measurement tools, and noted visible and structural improvements to the skin. Statistically significant improvements in wrinkle depth, elasticity, firmness, skin thickness, skin moisturization, epidermal water loss, and dark spot pigmentation were observed in the treatment group starting at four weeks. Additionally, the participants who received treatment self-reported improvements in stress and fatigue, suggesting that the polyphenol-rich ingredient may have other benefits which promote overall well-being.

“Extensive scientific research has demonstrated that botanical phenolic compounds have a wealth of benefits for preserving the appearance and function of aging skin,” explains Miguel Poza, Nutra Division Director of Monteloeder. “This inspired us to craft a unique botanical blend designed tosynergisticallytarget the underlying mechanisms of skin aging and enhance beauty from within. The Eternalyoung blend is the result of extensive research and experimentation on numerous botanical actives for their antioxidant and melanin-inhibition activity, as well as their ability to boost skin cell proliferation.  Anothergoal was to find the right combination of ingredients that could reduce telomere shortening while activate telomerase, an enzyme that helps maintain telomere length and in turn, stimulate rejuvenation.”

Previous research found that the consumption of phenolic compounds native to the Eternalyoung blend, specifically punicalagins, flavones, phenylpropanoids, and triterpenes, benefit skin due to both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which modulate cellular pathways involved in the skin aging process.

    Cellular Aging

The clinical study followed up an in vitro study which demonstrated that the four-extract blend slowed down telomere shortening rates in human dermal fibroblasts, which is a marker of longevity in cells.

Telomeres are repetitive DNA base units that protect chromosome ‘caps’ during cell division. Telomeres shorten after each division until they reach a certain length where cells cease to divide and enter senescence, producing inflammatory cytokines that disrupt the function of cells and surrounding tissue. This in turn declines the skin’s self-regenerative potential, and reduces collagen and elastin fibers. External factors such as diet, sun irradiation, and environmental pollution can hasten telomere contraction.

“The positive effects observed in this study could be due to the capacity of this formulato boost fibroblast proliferation and reduce oxidative stress and glycation,” explains Poza. It also maintains the skin’s youthful state by targeting the fundamental cause of aging. By maintaining telomere length, Eternalyoung prolongs cell lifespan, stimulating aging cells to act like young cells. Since it has both corrective and preventive impact, it is suitable for both younger consumers seeking to prevent the signs of aging, as well as mature consumers searching for a solution to aging skin. As a multifunctional ingredient that targets a number of skin issues, nearly anyone can benefit from incorporating Eternalyoung into their skincare routine.”
