Ingredient supplier Bartek has broken ground on the construction of what will be the world’s largest malic acid and food-grade fumaric acid production facility. Engineering consulting firm WSP Global is leading construction and design for the project.
When completed in the fourth quarter of 2023, this $160 million project will double Bartek’s capacity for these clean-label food additives, and improve the company’s position in the market for the ingredients. Malic acid contributes to the sour taste in fruits and is often used as a food additive, and fumaric acid is often used as a food additive due to its fruit-like taste.
Bartek said in this announcement that it anticipates continued market expansion for these ingredients, and the added capacity will support malic and fumaric growth in the years to come. The new facility will also be able to be expanded to produce new products such as buffer and fortification salts, along with additional volumes of malic and fumaric acid.
