OmegaQuant Opens Australia Lab to Service the APAC Region

New lab established to expedite processing of Omega-3 Index tests and analyses in the Asia-Pacific region.

OmegaQuant, a leader in omega-3 and fatty acid testing, has opened a new testing lab in Brisbane, Australia—OmegaQuant Asia Pacific Pty. Ltd. Established to expedite the processing of Omega-3 Index tests and analyses, the lab currently serves as a hub for the entire Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. Previously, all tests were routed through OmegaQuant’s U.S. headquarters in Sioux Falls, SD.

Omega-3s, specifically EPA and DHA, are important for heart, brain, eye and joint health. Unfortunately, most people don’t get enough of these valuable fatty acids, which can increase their risk of several of the most serious health issues.

The Omega-3 index is expressed as a percent of total red blood cell (RBC) fatty acids and is a long-term, stable marker of omega-3 status that accurately reflects tissue levels of EPA and DHA. An Omega-3 Index between 8% and 12% is considered the optimal range, because at these levels risk of sudden cardiac death decreases dramatically.

Blood samples can be collected at home or in a physician’s office by a simple finger stick. Only 1 drop of blood is needed. In a matter of weeks, test-takers will receive a detailed explanation of their results, and can reach out with questions about the results.

The Omega-3 Index test was developed by Dr. William Harris, an internationally recognized expert in omega-3 fatty acids, who has spent several decades studying these special nutrients. The test itself has been used in more than 300 research studies.

Dr. Harris founded OmegaQuant in 2009 and has received several grants for studies on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on human health. He currently has more than 300 publications on fatty acids.

Studies using the Omega-3 Index in Australia have reported an average level of about 5%, which is well below the target value of 8-12%. But Australians are not alone. Many populations globally struggle to make it above 6%. The Omega-3 Index test is a first step people can take to improve their omega-3 status.

The Omega-3 Index can be corrected by simple dietary modification or supplementation with fish, krill or algal oils containing EPA and DHA. Once people know their level, they can immediately make changes to improve their Omega-3 Index.

OmegaQuant will continue to support fatty acid research in the APAC region through collaboration and special pricing. OmegaQuant partners with organizations in many different ways to promote the use of EPA and DHA.

“Having a lab local to the APAC region will significantly cut turnaround times. This is very important to us, especially when people are waiting for results that will help them make the necessary dietary adjustments to increase omega-3 intake,” said Dr. Bill Harris.
