A black seed ingredient marketed by TriNutra as ThymoQuin-Ocare was shown to support measures of oral health, with benefits across plaque accumulation, gingival health, and oral microbiome balance.

Combined with past studies, the ingredient has been shown to suppress microbial overgrowth and reduce acid formation; support reductions in plaque and tartar accumulation; and promote fresher breath while supporting gum and dental health.

Gingival inflammation and oral dysbiosis can lead to acid formation and tooth demineralization, which can contribute to oral health issues. Adjunctive therapies are shown to potentially offer benefits alongside brushing, flossing, and mouthwash.

In the new study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, Food Science, and Technology, researchers evaluated the ingredient in an oral health lozenge over a 28-day period. Researchers tracked dental health, gingival health, and microbial shifts during supplementation.

Improvements were observed in dental plaque accumulation and gingival bleeding, with Gingival Index scores decreasing by 14%. Most (67%) participants showed measurable reductions in gingival inflammation and all participants demonstrated at least one measurable positive outcome.

Oral microbiota analysis showed that 89% of participants had an increase in the Shannon Diversity Index, indicating growth of beneficial commensal microflora, with no pathogenic microflora growth observed before or after application.

Subjectively, 67-78% of participants reported fresher, longer-lasting breath, and 89% noted visible improvements in gum appearance, tooth cleanliness, and overall oral wellness.

“The oral microbiome plays a central role in maintaining gum health, immune function, and barrier integrity,” said Morris Zelkha, CEO of TriNutra. “We are thrilled that the research findings suggest Thymoquin-OCare supports optimal oral hygiene and a healthier mouth.”
