Sabinsa’s Curcumin C3 Reduct Receives Novel Food Authorization in Great Britain

Sabinsa announced that Curcumin C3 Reduct, a standardized tetrahydrocurcuminoids ingredient derived from turmeric, has received novel food authorization for use in food supplements by the Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland, allowing for it to be included in supplement at a maximum daily dose of 140 mg for adults 18 and older.

FSA and FSS concluded that the conditions of use aren’t expected to pose a safety concern for the general population, building on a previous positive opinion generated by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in October 2021.

The ingredient is also Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) in the United States.

Curcumin C3 Reduct is produced through catalytic hydrogenation of curcuminoids extracted from the roots of Curcuma longa, yielding a powder containing 95% tetrahydrocurcuminoids.

The authorization follows a safety dossier submitted by Sabinsa Europe GmbH in 2023, supported by multiple toxicological studies, genotoxicity assessments, compositional analyses, and human data. There were no concerns from FSA and FSS regarding allergenicity, genotoxicity, or product stability.
