Dave Zabriskie, former World Tour professional cyclist, Olympian, and the first American to win stages in all three Grand Tours (the Tour de France, Vuelta a España, and Giro d’Italia), has launched Cognitive Protocol, a new initiative focused on concussion recovery and long-term cognitive health.

Throughout his career, Zabriskie endured significant crashes and concussions at a time when there was a critical gap in healthcare for athletes.

“During my worst crash at Redlands, I woke up in a helicopter after being unconscious for 15 minutes,” said Zabriskie. “Back then, if you had no broken bones, you got back on the bike. The reality was head injuries just weren’t properly understood or addressed.”

Zabriskie partnered with Scott Thomson and other health experts to develop Cognitive Protocol, a supplement regimen designed to support cognitive function during the acute recovery phase and provide ongoing support for those facing lingering concussion symptoms, the company reports.

“Recovery doesn’t stop at the body. Brain fog, memory lapses, mood swings—these are real struggles affecting athletes and high performers long after an initial impact,” said Thomson. “Our goal at Cognitive Protocol is to make proactive brain health as fundamental as physical training.”

“Protecting your brain should be as essential as training your body,” said Zabriskie. “This is about empowering athletes, and anyone who’s ever taken a hard hit, to recover smarter, feel sharper, and thrive.”

Zabriskie had a long list of teammates in mind, including his Race Across America teammate Mickey Dymond.

On October 9, 2019, Dymond, a motorsport icon, sustained a traumatic brain injury when he crashed his bicycle during a training ride in Orange County, California. Even though Dymond was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, he still sustained extensive head trauma and spent five days unconscious in an ICU. Despite extensive progress in recovery, Dymond was still dealing with significant symptoms every day. Zabriskie felt that Dymond was an obvious choice for the brand’s development team.

“For a few weeks, I stopped all my other supplements and focused solely on Cognitive Protocol,” said Dymond. “I noticed improved focus and better sleep. Before, I slept poorly and couldn’t tell if I was dreaming or just thinking. Since using the protocol, I’ve noticed a big difference. I’m sleeping better, dreaming again, and I can focus more during the day. Memories I thought were lost forever are coming back. I’m able to remember things and be more present. The protocol is helping to balance things out, allowing my mind to be freer, improving memory, and I feel like it’s giving me peace of mind.”
