Bioriginal Food and Science Corp. just launched a new cold-pressed borage oil standardized to contain 25% gamma-linoleic acid.

The company was able to produce the botanical ingredient through a selective breeding program designed to maximize GLA content and crop yields while preserving the plant’s genetic integrity without the use of genetic modification.

By isolating and propagating favorable traits over multiple generations, the program achieved a breakthrough in agronomic performance, GLA potency, and improved bioavailability. The high-potency, patent-pending borage oil allows for reduced dosage requirements, streamlined formulation, and enhanced functional benefits across health and wellness applications.

“Borage has been foundational to Bioriginal since our inception,” said Shannon Sears, president and CEO of Bioriginal. “This launch reflects our continued innovation in developing science-backed, high-quality ingredients that set new standards for the industry and empower our customers to create more effective, trusted health solutions.”

Bioriginal’s borage grows in Canadian prairies in a closed-loop system, where the company controls every stage of production from seed development and cultivation to harvesting, extraction, and final downstream processing. The vertically integrated approach supports traceability, sustainability, and bioactive efficacy, delivering a consistent product.

Other sources of GLA include blackcurrant and evening primrose oils, which typically have a GLA content of 10-15%. Borage’s broader application has been constrained by supply inconsistencies and variable product quality. While GMO safflower oil recently emerged as a high-GLA alternative, some brands and consumers may have a preference for a non-GMO product, which Bioriginal’s borage oil can provide.

The high-GLA borage oil is suited for a range of applications, such as beauty from within/cosmeceutical products, women’s health supplements, joint health formulas, and pet nutrition products targeting skin, coat, and mobility. Its concentrated bioavailability promotes the formation of anti-inflammatory eicosanoids, per the company, promoting a healthier inflammatory response.
