Bioriginal Granted NPN from Health Canada for Novusetin Fisetin Extract

This is the first time an ingredient containing the plant flavonol has received such an approval from Canada’s regulatory agency.

Bioriginal Food & Science Corp. announced that its fisetin ingredient, branded as Novusetin, has been granted a Natural Product Number (NPN) from Health Canada. This is the first NPN issued for this plant flavonol from Canada’s regulatory agency.

The approval allows Bioriginal and its customers to sell and make claims on the antioxidant benefits of Novusetin by helping to protect against oxidative damage caused by free radicals. The NPN, issued in accordance with the Natural Health Products Regulations, provides Canadians with a way to identify natural health products that have been assessed by Health Canada for safety, efficacy, and quality, Bioriginal reports.

Novusetin is standardized to contain 95% fisetin, and belongs to the bioflavonoid family of polyphenols which have been investigated for antioxidant properties.

“We are very pleased with Health Canada’s decision to grant Bioriginal a Natural Product Number for our fisetin extract, as it further validates Novusetin’s standardization and benefits, making it one of the more interesting antioxidants for natural health products,” said Petros Loutas, vice president of QA/QC regulatory of Bioriginal. “The approval from Health Canada will make it easier for Bioriginal to maintain compliance with regulations and meet the requirements of existing and future clients.”

The NPN issued comes at a time in which consumer demand for natural antioxidants continues to grow due to increased interest in these ingredients for lifestyle applications such as aging and cognitive health.
