The Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) has published its annual Ingredient Market Report, which offers an in-depth analysis of the raw materials segment of the supply chain of EPA and DHA.

The report covers the two omega-3 fatty acids in six finished product applications: dietary supplements, pharmaceuticals, food/beverage, pet nutrition, infant formula, and clinical nutrition/medical foods.

The report, which is over 200 pages, includes data from 2024 and 2025 and projections into 2028, along with color commentary on trends and developments that impacted market dynamics over the timeframe covered in the report.

The report also includes a new strategies section this year, which can help stakeholders better understand the competitive landscape.

In 2025, the total global volume of omega-3 ingredients reached 136,000 metric tons, a 2.6% increase over 2024. The total value fell 4.3% to reach $2.53 billion. This decline, GOED reports, is a price correction, not a demand collapse; the industry experienced a spike in refined oil prices during the 2023-2024 El Niño, which limited the supply of Peruvian anchovy oil. Prices normalized by late 2024, and GOED forecasts that volume will grow at an annual rate of 3-4% through 2028.

Key Takeaways

The U.S. and Europe are still the largest EPA and DHA markets, but China led growth this year. China’s supplement market is expanding and getting more sophisticated, GOED reported, and pet nutrition demand is rising fast. Mexico, the rest of Asia, and other regional markets across the globe are all increasingly seen as growth opportunities, GOED reported.

Most of the application categories grew in volume. However, infant formula and pharmaceuticals remained flat. “Pharma was hit by Vascepa generics in the U.S., though approvals in Europe should restart growth. Infant formula is constrained by falling birth rates in its core Asian, European, and U.S. markets; future potential lies in Latin America and Africa,” GOED reported.

According to GOED, supply challenges and geopolitics present the biggest risks to the industry. While the supply chain became diversified after the most recent El Niño event, it is still dependent on a few origins. Conflict in the Middle East, and protectionist policies in various markets, could disrupt trade and raise inflation, pressuring consumers to cut discretionary spending, GOED reported.
