Nutraceutical: Hawthorn
Indication: Cardiovascular risk factors
Source: Nutr Res, 2011;31(4):262-9.
Research: For this double-blind, placebo-controlled study, researchers enrolled 30 patients over 40 years of age with three or more cardiovascular risk factors—hypertension, obesity, hyperlipidemia, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, family history of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The subjects were administered either an herb blend supplement (containing beetroot and hawthorn berry) or placebo twice daily on an empty stomach for 30 days.
Results: Patients taking the herb blend supplement experienced a significant increase in both plasma nitrite and nitrate, indicating an increase in systemic NO (nitric oxide) availability. There was also a statistically significant reduction of elevated triglycerides in 72% of the herb blend supplement group in comparison to their levels at the start of the trial. These findings suggest that a combination of beetroot and hawthorn, because of their NO activity, shows promise in reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease.
