While the world’s economic problems have hit many industries hard, the nutritional supplement business has proved resilient on the strength of spending by the aging Baby Boomer population and other health conscious consumers, according to a new report titled, “Nutritional Supplements in the U.S., 4th Edition” from Packaged Facts. The report estimates U.S. retail sales of nutritional supplements exceeded $9 billion in 2009, up 8% over 2008 sales. From 2005 to 2009, the market grew by a total of 26%, fueled by growing consumer awareness about health maintenance, as well as pressure by the media and government to enforce product accountability. The shift toward an increasingly health conscious attitude, along with the supplement industry’s move toward more science-based claims and other efforts to shore up its credibility, will help push nutritional products further into the mainstream.
Packaged Facts has also released “Fiber Food Ingredients in the U.S.: Soluble-, Insoluble- and Digestive-Resistant Types.” With most Americans only consuming about half the recommended amount of 25 to 30 grams of fiber daily, major food companies and other industry players are introducing waves of new fiber-fortified food and beverage products. Packaged Facts predicts the novel fiber food ingredient category will increase its share of the market by more than 750%, jumping 35 percentage points from an almost 5% share in 2004 to a 39% share in 2014.
