OxyPhyte Natural Antioxidants from RFI Ingredients have proven cellular uptake and activity using the CAP-e (Cell-based Antioxidant Protection in Erythrocytes) assay. The CAP-e assay evaluates the antioxidant potential of a substance only if the substance is able to cross the lipid bilayer cell membrane.
This ex vivo test uses human erythrocytes (red blood cells), which are inert and therefore do not produce reactive oxygen species. The red blood cells are exposed to the antioxidant substances and oxidation is triggered by the addition of a free radical generator. The oxidative damage within the cell is then measured as the relative fluorescence resulting from the reaction of the reactive oxygen species with fluorescent dye.
The CAP-e data answer the question of whether the antioxidants are able to enter living cells and protect them from oxidation. Results with RFI’s OxyPhyte ingredients show that each ingredient has cellular bioavailability and prevents oxidation within the cell. In fact, the results of the study show that all the OxyPhyte ingredients tested have better cellular uptake than quercetin, a pure antioxidant compound.
