A new human clinical study published in Lipids in Health and Disease has shown that the Core formula in Soy Labs’ (Fairfield, CA) Cardio-Trim line of nutritional supplements is effective in the fight against metabolic syndrome and obesity. The Core formula contains the proprietary ingredient AlbumaSoy (a patent-pending soy albumin extract), as well as a standardized, patented extract of Cissus quadrangularis, vitamins B6 and B12, chromium polynicotinate, folic acid, selenium and green tea extract.
The 8-week study included 123 overweight and obese subjects ranging in age from 19 to 50. The group included 92 obese (BMI>30) and 31 overweight (BMI=25-29) participants; 53% were female and 47% were male. Using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design, the obese patients were divided into three groups—the overweight subjects formed a fourth group. All participants in the test groups received two daily doses (514 mg each) of the Core formula. The groups were composed as follows: Group 1 (obese) received a placebo and no diet; Group 2 (obese) received the Core formula with no diet; Group 3 (obese) received the Core formula and a diet of 2100-2200 calories per day; and Group 4 (overweight) received the Core formula and no diet.
According to the results, there was a significant improvement in every measurement for the three treatment groups vs. the placebo group. The mean weight reduction for Group 1 was 5.1 lbs.; 14.5 lbs. for Group 2; 17.8 lbs. for Group 3; and 8.1 lbs. for Group 4. The Core formula similarly improved cholesterol levels in all treatment groups. There was a decrease in plasma total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, while HDL cholesterol increased. Taken together, those changes translate to a dramatic improvement in the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL and LDL cholesterol. Those in the three treatment groups also experienced a significant decrease in triglycerides, C-reactive protein and fasting blood glucose levels. No negative side effects were observed.
