Ocean Nutrition Canada (ONC), Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, recently announced that its MEG-3 brand of omega 3 DHA/EPA (derived from fish oil) has been incorporated into new varieties of breads in the U.S. The companies behind these bread launches include Wegman’s, which introduced three breads containing MEG-3, The Baker, which launched a whole grain bread containing MEG-3 and Arnold Foods Company, which launched Arnold Smart & Healthy 100% whole wheat bread containing MEG-3 in April. Getting omega 3’s into foods that are acceptable is key, according to Ian Lucas, vice president of marketing and new product development, ONC. “Nine out of 10 foods choices for consumers have remained the same since 1985, and fish was not part of that equation,” he said. Besides bread, Mr. Lucas said ONC’s MEG-3 could also be incorporated into dairy products and nutrition bars.
