As part of its ongoing effort to advance public health, the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), Rockville, MD, has created two new monographs, “Fish Oil Rich in Omega-3 Acids” and “Fish Oil Rich in Omega-3 Acids Capsules.” These monographs are available for review in USP’s July–August 2003 Pharmacopeial Forum (PF). According to USP, research suggests that the omega 3 fatty acids EPA AND DHA can be beneficial for the hearts of healthy people and those at high risk of or those who have cardiovascular disease. Omega 3 fatty acids are found in certain species of fish, such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon. These monographs appear in the In-Process Revision section of the PF and are scheduled to become official in Supplement 1 of the United States Pharmacopeia 27 and National Formulary 22 (USP 27–NF 22). Publication of this announcement in the PF is an opportunity to provide comments before the monographs are finalized.
In other developments, USP has also created monographs on lycopene due to the numerous dietary supplement products that contain the ingredient. USP has created three new monographs, including lycopene, lycopene preparation and lycopene tomato extract. These monographs were made available for review in USP’s May-June 2003 PF. These monographs appear in the Pharmacopeial Previews section of the PF, and are scheduled to be official in the 2004 edition of the USP 27-NF 22, Supplement 2.
