Cactus Botanics is now providing astaxanthin raw material to the dietary supplement industry. The supplier is offering natural astaxanthin extracted from algae in both powder and oil forms.
According to Carol Cheow, general manager of the company, astaxanthin is a colorful, lipid-soluble pigment, that is believed to be an extremely potent antioxidant. Research, she notes, shows that astaxanthin is 65 times more powerful than vitamin C, 54 times more powerful than beta-carotene, and 14 times more powerful than vitamin E. The astaxanthin supplied by Cactus Botanics, said Ms. Cheow, exhibits very strong free-radical scavenging activity and protects cells, organs and tissues from oxidative damage by working throughout the entire body. "Astaxanthin supports a healthy oxidative balance, which leads to better overall health," she commented. "Our astaxanthin is 550 times more powerful than vitamin E and 11 times more powerful than beta-carotene at neutralizing singlet oxygen."
She continued, “A new research article published in NutraFoods, a peer-reviewed technical journal, points out that in different antioxidant tests at a prominent U.S.-based university and a leading independent laboratory specializing in antioxidant testing, algae accumulates the highest levels of astaxanthin and was proved to be a minimum of 20 times to over 50 times stronger as an antioxidant than synthetic astaxanthin."
