Research conducted on Bionov’s SOD B, a melon concentrate rich in Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), found that the ingredient induced the expression of endogenous enzymatic antioxidant defenses, thus reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. While SOD is a protein that cannot be absorbed through oral administration, it does provide many benefits including the reduction of cellulite and the inhibition of stress and fatigue, according to the company.
Within the last ten years, Bionov has focused its Research & Development strategy on the exploration of the mechanism of action of oral administration with SOD B, and according to J. Carillon, pre-clinical research manager at Bionov, results “have shown that an SOD B oral supplementation is linked with the induction of endogenous antioxidant enzymes expression — SODs, Catalase (CAT), Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx) — in different animal models.” Four major scientific publications, including an expert review, were published in 2013 to expose and detail this specific new mechanism of action. These findings suggest that proteins do not necessarily have to be absorbed to convey a benefit.
Bionov believes such findings “could play a preventive role by protecting against any physiological alteration,” said B. Lemaire, business marketing director for the company. Thanks to this specific mechanism of action “it is now possible to explain the benefits of an SOD B supplementation in numerous applications, including the improvement of vitality, cognitive performances, eye health, joint health, skin beauty, etc.” he added.
