The U.S. FDA has extended the comment period on several proposed rules related to the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The agency also reopened the comment period for its draft guidance for industry, “Frequently Asked Questions About Medical Foods: Second Edition.” The FDA will accept comments on the draft guidance through Dec. 16.
Comments for two proposed rules under FSMA are due by Jan. 27, 2014: “Foreign Supplier Verification Programs for Importers of Food for Humans and Animals” (FSVPs) and “Accreditation of Third-Party Auditors/Certification Bodies to Conduct Food Safety Audits and to Issue Certifications” (Third-Party), which appeared in the Jul. 29, 2013 Federal Register. Comments were originally due by Nov. 26.
FDA took this action in response to requests for an extension to allow interested parties an opportunity to consider the interrelationship between these two proposed rules and the proposed rule announced in October 2013, “Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Food for Animals.”
The agency also extended the comment period for the “Notice of Intent to Prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the Proposed Rule: Standards for Growing, Harvesting, Packing and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption.” Comments on the scope of issues FDA should include in the Environmental Impact Statement may be submitted until Mar. 15, 2014. Comments were originally due by Nov. 15.
