A five-time Grammy winning musician, actor, artist, activist and humanitarian, Ziggy Marley has established his presence on the public stage for more than a quarter century. Following his performance at the 2013 Grammy Awards, paying tribute to his father Bob Marley, he remains on the road in support of his latest album Ziggy Marley In Concert. In recent years, he has been involved in a number of projects, including an extensive world tour that spanned most of 2011 and 2012. He served as executive producer of the celebrated documentary, Marley; is hosting his own monthly radio show, Legends of Reggae, on SiriusXM’s The Joint; and in 2012, launched a GMO-free product line, Ziggy Marley Organics, which was fueled by his desire to help people and the planet become healthier. Initial offerings include the world’s first flavored coconut oils and world’s first roasted hempseed snacks. The products are distributed throughout the U.S. and Canada, and are available in more than 1,000 stores nationwide.
Health E-Insights: What brought you to start Ziggy Marley Organics?
Mr. Marley: My love of good food and food that is good for you, but also to have a voice in that industry, to speak about food as medicine and food as poison, in particular GMOs (genetically modified organisms).
Health E-Insights: I suppose hemp products felt like a natural fit?
Mr. Marley: Literally and figuratively. Hemp is one of the most nutritious seeds on the planet. And as I learned more about it, the more I thought it was something that I wanted to use for myself and then to promote it to give it another voice in the advocacy. And why? Because it is so good for you.
Health E-Insights: What’s your best-selling product?
Mr. Marley: I never follow the numbers. People like it and I am happy for that. Maybe one day I’ll know.
Health E-Insights: Which is most important to your organization—mission, core values or vision?
Mr. Marley: Love is the most important thing. Everything starts there. Without that at the beginning nothing else matters, so that is the most important
thing.
Health E-Insights: Is there a golden rule by which you live?
Mr. Marley: Not really. Humility, spirituality, love. Many things make up my golden rule.
Health E-Insights: What product or thing would you invent if you had the opportunity?
Mr. Marley: Good question. I’m a history lover, so a time machine probably.
Health E-Insights: Is there something about you that people would find surprising?
Mr. Marley: That I don’t smile all the time.
Health E-Insights: What other forms of music do you like besides reggae?
Mr. Marley: Everything the universe of music has to offer I have listened to and will continue to listen to. My mind is very open.
Health E-Insights: How’s your new album being received?
Mr. Marley: People love the message in the music.
Health E-Insights: Do you sing in the shower?
Mr. Marley: Most of the time.
