The Latin American Responsible Nutrition Alliance (ALANUR), Buenos Aires, Argentina, held a workshop in Venezuela in November of 2012, bringing together authorities and the food supplement sector to discuss issues related to food supplement rules as the authority develops a draft regulation. The workshop, which was co-organized with the International Alliance of Dietary/Food Supplement Associations (IADSA), was attended by officials from the National Institute of Nutrition, the National Institute of Hygiene “Rafael Rangel” (INHRR) and the Ministry of Health, all involved in the regulation and registration of food supplements. The Ministry and the INHRR are currently developing a draft regulation for food supplements and other product categories bordering the supplement category.
The workshop covered trends in the regulation of food supplements in Latin America and worldwide, including classification and definition; the use of nutrition and health claims; the role of scientific risk assessment to establish maximum nutrient levels versus the use of Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs); and the characteristic features of the registration and notification systems and monitoring of products once they are on the market across the globe.
