Nutraceutical: Probiotic and conventional yogurt
Indication: Cholesterol
Source: Br J Nutr, June 2010;103(12)1778-83.
Research: Many studies have been done on the hypocholesterolemic effect of probiotic yogurt. The results, however, are not conclusive. The aim of this study was to test the effect of probiotic and conventional yogurt on the lipid profile in women. Researchers recruited 90 females aged 19-49 years into three groups: (1) 300 grams probiotic yogurt containing lactobacillus acidophilus La5 and bifidobacterium lactis Bb12; (2) 300 grams conventional yogurt; (3) no yogurt for 6 weeks.
Results: There was a decrease in cholesterol in the probiotic and conventional yogurt groups and an increase in HDL cholesterol levels in the probiotic group. Researchers believe these findings suggest probiotic and conventional yogurt can produce positive changes in lipid profiles that may contribute to the prevention of hyperlipidemia.
