UAS Laboratories, Inc. Eden Prairie, MN, has introduced Cran-Gyn DDS, a patent-pending product for women’s health that contains DDS probiotics, cranberry extract and D-mannose. It is designed to inhibit E. coli-related urinary tract problems, restore healthy microflora, improve digestive health and boost immunity, according to the company. Research suggests that proanthocyanidins found in cranberry bind to P-fimbriated E. coli (mannose insensitive) thereby preventing the adhesion of E. coli to uroepithelial cells and reducing the ability of E. coli to cause urinary infection. D-Mannose, a naturally occurring, non-caloric, simple sugar extracted from the Birch tree, inhibits adherence of E. coli type 1 fimbriae to uroepithelial cells, which causes the majority of UTIs. DDS-probiotics contain the superstrain, Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1.
