Before consumers really bought into the idea of “superfruits,” NP Nutra, Rancho Dominguez, CA, was searching for and developing nutraceutical ingredients derived from exotic plants in foreign lands. The company remains intent on supplying the most potent and purest ingredients at competitive prices.
“NP Nutra specializes in exotic products from the far corners of the earth,” said Andrew Carter, quality control manager. “NP Nutra’s scientists are constantly researching dozens of new plants for their potential benefits to consumers worldwide. This has enabled us to be on the cutting edge of emerging new ingredients, such as acai, goji, mangosteen, camu camu, yumberry and, most recently, maqui.
The company started out as a manufacturer of noni fruit powder, noni juice and other tropical Hawaiian fruit ingredients in the late 1990s. Since then NP Nutra has been establishing manufacturing facilities in foreign countries, including Brazil, Peru, India, China and Thailand. With growing emphasis on quality and safety, NP Nutra is focused on ensuring that all of its production facilities around the globe meet current GMP regulations.
Today, the company supplies large, global food and beverage manufacturers with popular superfruits, antioxidants, weight-management ingredients, botanical extracts, herbs and other natural ingredients.
“We also offer more certified organic products now than ever before,” Mr. Carter added. “As a leader in the industry, our customers expect us to offer them both solutions and suggestions for how they can continue to produce excellent products year to year.”
As consumers become increasingly demanding and discerning about the health products they purchase, potent antioxidants and superfruits continue to gain mainstream popularity. “Because NP Nutra is a vertically integrated company, we guarantee unmatched traceability from the farmer to you for all of our products,” Mr. Carter noted. Vertical integration allows the company to control the entire production process, and consequently, to absorb price fluctuations without passing them on to customers.
Despite the challenging economy, sales have been up about 15% in 2009 compared to 2008, according to the company. “As consumers are becoming more health conscious and increasingly favor healthy lifestyles and prevention over taking prescription drugs, the industry is projected to grow another 10% in 2010,” said Mr. Carter. “As the consumer continues to struggle and increasingly shops at lower priced outlets, profit margins may continue to fall in 2010. We are uniquely positioned to offer all savings to our customers.”
In terms of recent developments, the last few months of 2009 were very busy for NP Nutra, according to Mr. Carter. “In September we moved into a new 26,000-square-foot facility in Rancho Dominguez, CA, in order to stock more products and offer shorter lead times to our customers.” In November of 2009, the company also launched a new line of potent maqui and sacha inchi ingredients, which Mr. Carter said will be found in many finished products by the spring of 2010.
