General Mills is reformulating its Wheaties breakfast cereal, teaming up with an elite group of athletes that includes Peyton Manning, triathlete Hunter Kemper, Kevin Garnett, gold medal-winning decathlete Bryan Clay and Albert Pujols. The group worked with food scientists and sports nutritionist Dr. John Ivy to create a new cereal formula that meets their nutritional needs, with the specific goal of fueling athletic performance. This panel narrowed the selection to three possible cereal formulas, and everyday athletes will help choose the final product. The first option is a lightly sweetened crunchy whole wheat flake with granola and crispy rice and a touch of cinnamon and honey. The second option is a lightly sweetened, hearty whole wheat flake with cinnamon clusters, and the third option is a lightly sweetened whole grain wheat and bran flake with fruit and crunchy almonds. The top three formulas are being taste-tested by a select group of everyday athletes, who are helping determine the winning formula, which will be unveiled in early September. The new product will be sold alongside the original Wheaties product.
