President Barack Obama has tapped Regina Benjamin, an Alabama family physician, for the post of surgeon general. She runs the La Batre Rural Health Clinic, which she founded in 1990. If confirmed by the Senate, Dr. Benjamin would oversee 6200 uniformed health professionals in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service, public-health specialists and doctors who work for the federal government, including experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
