Demand for alternative sweeteners in the U.S. is projected to reach $1.3 billion in 2013, increasing more than 3% annually, according to a new report from The Freedonia Group, Inc., Cleveland, OH. Though expected to remain a fairly small share of the overall market, newer alternative sweeteners such as Reb-A, an extract of the stevia plant, will register the sharpest growth and generate the most buzz among food and beverage processors, as well as among consumers. Nevertheless, conventional sweeteners (i.e., sucrose and corn sweeteners) will continue to dominate the U.S. market.
