With 37 years of experience in the natural products market, Bio-Botanica, Hauppauge, NY, specializes in customizing innovative, functional products, currently supplying more than 500 botanical extracts to the nutraceutical, food and beverage, cosmetic and personal care industries.
The company has developed extensive expertise in customizing formulas to meet various specifications since its establishment in 1972, according to Mark Sysler, business manager and vice president of sales. Today it supplies an extensive range of extracts in liquid, powder and solid forms.
"Bio-Botanica's BioChelated cold extraction process enables us to bring custom and unique products to the market-free of harsh chemicals, toxic solvents and excessive heat, yielding a truly bioavailable botanical extract ideal for many applications," Mr. Sysler said.
Bio-Botanica operates three unique divisions that cater to the industry, providing bulk ingredients, packaging facilities for finished products and a private label line sold to health food stores.
The company's expanded manufacturing facility in Hauppauge, NY, offers customers better turnaround times, Mr. Sysler said. "Our 140,000 square-foot, FDA registered, pharmaceutically licensed, GMP compliant and kosher inspected/certified facility, with state of the art quality control/assurance lab, allows us to offer services that include blending (wet or dry), compounding, extracting, milling, spray drying, vacuum distillation and custom formulating."
Quality control is at the heart of Bio-Botanica's philosophy, according to the company. Manufactured products must match specifications related to refraction, melting point, pH, as well as specific gravity, density and water levels.
Bio-Botanica also incorporates highly sophisticated analytical equipment, such as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography, infrared spectrometer (IR), ultra violet spectrometer (UV) and total organic carbon analyzer (TOC), which allows analysts to check water for chemical or microbiological contamination, down to parts per billion. TOC is the only FDA recognized method for United States Pharmacopeia (USP) grade water testing.
Moreover, the quality control department has a fully equipped microbiological testing laboratory, which follows the appropriate testing methods as defined by the USP. The microbiological laboratory is used to test all botanical extracts for any micro-activity, guaranteeing that botanical extracts are free of any unwanted and potentially unhealthy microorganisms.
The company has recently committed to developing and manufacturing certified organic extracts for the cosmetic and personal care markets, introducing four organic ingredients: licorice extract, calendula extract, chamomile extract and green tea extract.
Additionally, its patent-pending Puresterol, pueraria mirifica extract from Thailand, has shown significant effectiveness in a recent research trial, which Mr. Sysler anticipates will be published in the near future. "It has application in menopausal and peri-menopausal products for internal use, as well as anti-aging products for topical use," he said. "This product will be developed further for the supplement and personal care industries."
With the down economy at the forefront of everyone's mind these days, Mr. Sysler said the nutraceuticals industry has certainly felt the effects. "Lower sales at the health food store will ultimately impact the manufacturer," he noted. "Our company structure is providing us the opportunity to work with many new customers who are looking for cost savings to effectively deal with this downturn. Our Hauppauge manufacturing facility provides faster turnarounds than overseas suppliers and our packaging provides customers the opportunity to quote smaller runs.
"We see Bio-Botanica as a source for custom manufactured extracts," he added. "Customers can become creative and make products that do not have run-of-the-mill ingredients. This enables them to set themselves apart from others. We will also work with our customers for custom formulations. This flexibility gives our company somewhat of an edge in a tough market."
With the company's commitment to product quality and professional service, alongside its extensive technical botanical experience and competitive pricing, Bio-Botanica is ready to advance its market presence despite the obstacles posed by current economic conditions.-S.M.
