With recent reports trumpeting the health benefits of vitamin D, a growing number of consumers are looking for high-dosage supplements. But scientific uncertainty has generated debate over the virtues and dangers of vitamin D. The most promising studies suggest a relationship between low vitamin D intake and many diseases, but they have failed to show a direct cause and effect. The argument continues about whether to increase the daily recommended intake of vitamin D, perhaps to as much as 2000 IU, as skeptics point to the lack of large-scale, randomized and double-blind clinical studies, while advocates claim there is an obvious vitamin D deficiency that should be addressed.
