New Century, KS-based Danisco has acquired an equity stake in New Zealand-based GraceLinc Limited, which produces and markets Glucagel, a naturally extracted barley beta-glucan. As a soluble dietary fiber ingredient, Glucagel offers potential benefits in the areas of cardiovascular health, digestive health, glucose control and weight management. The purchase represents the start of a partnership aimed to make Glucagel a category-leading functional food and dietary supplement ingredient. When key milestones are met related to completion of human intervention studies and process development, Danisco plans to move to full ownership of the start-up company.
Recognizing significant growth potential in the apple polyphenol market, the company has also partnered with Coressence Limited to invest in Evesse, an apple polyphenol ingredient, which will be available as a powder and granule. It has a neutral taste and odor, allowing easy formulation in different foods and beverages, according to Danisco. The product is particularly strong in cardiovascular health, one of the company’s key strategic health platforms. The first sales are expected to occur in 2011, initially targeting the dietary supplement market, but will also be developed in food and beverages.
