Diana Naturals: Focusing on the Science of Supplements
In today’s nutraceuticals industry, raw material suppliers must differentiate themselves with a quality product, ongoing clinical support or intellectual property protection. Diana Naturals, headquartered in Antrain, France, with U.S. offices in Valley Cottage, NY, is in a position to offer a winning combination of all three to the dietary supplement and functional food industries.
With origins in the mainstream food industry, Diana Naturals has five GMP-certified manufacturing facilities in France, as well as a plant in Chile and sales offices throughout the world. The company specializes in botanical raw materials with guaranteed, naturally-occurring actives, as well as fruit and vegetable powders and natural colors. It also has strong agricultural and extraction expertise and an onsite laboratory to assist customers with product development, functional food prototypes and extensive applications work.
Under the Phytonutriance banner, Diana Naturals has created a line of high quality branded ingredients. The line incorporates patentable raw materials upon which the company continues to perform ongoing clinical work.
Phytonutriance CranPure cranberry extract is standardized to 30% PACs. It contains 120 mg of CranPure, which yields 36 mg PACs and can easily be formulated into a single tablet or capsule, allowing the use of a health claim in France: “Help reduce the adhesion of certain E. coli bacteria to the urinary tract walls.”
Phytonutriance HealSea standardized fucus extract is positioned for cardiovascular health. Based on Fucus vesiculosus, a brown algae rich in phytotannins, HealSea is standardized to 11% polyphenol phloroglucinol equivalent and been clinically proven in in vivo human and animal studies to significantly increase the production of aortic nitric oxide—known for its vasorelaxant and antithrombin effects—and to reduce the susceptibility of VLDL and LDL cholesterol-rich lipoproteins to oxidation ex vivo. A patent has been filed in France.
Phytonutriance Brassicare broccoli extract is standardized to glucoraphane, a potent glucosinolate. Brassicare is a strong antioxidant, aiding in cell detoxification and protecting against oxidative stress. Additionally, recent in vitro research has shown that—at lower concentrations compared to pure sulforaphane—Brassicare is effective against Helicobacter pylori bacteria, which is linked to ulcers and certain cancers.
Phytonutriance Appl’In patented apple extract is standardized to 80% polyphenols and 5% phloridzin for weight management applications. A strong antioxidant due to its polyphenol content, Appl’In has also been researched for its effect on blood sugar. A preliminary human clinical trial evaluated the impact of Appl’In on glycemic response and reported a significant difference in glucose concentrations as well as a satiety effect. Additional clinicals are underway to further support this research as well as to test the effect on lipase inhibition.
Phytonutriance ChondrActiv is a joint health formulation, which consists of chondroitin sulfate and a collagen joint complex. ChondrActiv is the subject of a recently completed human clinical trial, which studied 68 subjects suffering from joint pain for 84 days. Initial results were positive, but the final analysis needs to be completed.
Brian Stagg, who handles new business development in North America, commented on the Phytonutriance line. “We’ve been very happy with the reception we’ve received from customers around our Phytonutriance products,” he said. “Each of our top brands—CranPure, HealSea, ChondrActiv, Brassicare and Appl’In—address specific market drivers, such as cardiovascular health, joint mobility, glucose control, etc., facing consumers today.”
He added, “Diana’s efforts to develop the science and technical expertise behind the Phytonutriance line is also paying off, as customers appreciate the substantiation of the products we offer. For example, CranPure, with a 30% PAC content, has garnered a lot of interest because it allows our customers to offer an effective dose in a single tablet or capsule.”
Organics continue to be a focus for Diana as well. In fact, organic carrot powder, standardized to carotenoids, and organic acerola extract, standardized to 17% vitamin C, are about to be launched. Other organic products in the pipeline include artichoke, black currant, blueberry, broccoli, cranberry and purple carrot.
