Representatives from the pharmaceutical service provider Diapharm, Oldenburg, Germany, have called on authorities to approve more robust product claims for traditional herbal medicines, differentiating them from claims for food supplements. According to Dr. Rainer Kolkmann of Diapharm, who spoke during the Drug Information Association’s (DIA) annual meeting, such action would compel manufacturers to invest in safety and quality standards for medicinal products, which support pharmaceutical companies in the development and market launch of medicinal products, medical devices and food supplements. Another Diapharm partner spoke to delegates at the DIA meeting about the evaluation and safety testing of herbal medicines, borderline products and medical devices.
