Consumer Product Testing Co.: One-Stop Shopping
Originally created as a contract testing laboratory for the cosmetic and personal care industry in 1975, Consumer Product Testing Co., (CPTC), Fairfield, NJ, has expanded not only their capabilities throughout the years, but also their client base as well. From cosmetics to pharmaceuticals to medical devices and specialty chemicals, and finally to dietary supplements/nutraceuticals, market need continues to drive CPTC’s service expansion.
For nutraceuticals in particular, companies have really started to realize what an asset CPTC can be in ensuring the quality and success of their products. “We can take a product from conception all the way through to market,” said Edward Murphy, director of marketing services. “The term most clients use for us in all our industries is ‘one-stop shopping’ because we are able to perform a multitude of different projects.”
Besides offering services in microbiology, analytical chemistry, safety, claims support and photobiology, CPTC can also supply the nutraceuticals industry with valuable services such, as raw material determination, stability, method development and validation, batch release, microbiology programs, claims validation and pre-clinical safety services. These services are provided in the company’s 45,000 square foot facility, which is equipped with cutting edge equipment and methodologies that enable CPTC to offer both routine and advanced research opportunities to their clients.
Currently of critical significance for the nutraceuticals market, CPTC offers testing programs required for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) compliance. “Our laboratory has been performing services in accordance with good manufacturing practices for many years, essentially due to our work in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries,” said Mr. Murphy. “Therefore we have taken it upon ourselves to assume a leading role in helping dietary supplement/nutra-ceutical companies with their GMP compliance.” CPTC can deliver properly executed and GMP compliant studies necessary to support their clients’ products.
Considering the ever-changing regulatory environment where there are still many products with unsubstantiated safety and claims profiles littering the marketplace, Mr. Murphy believes attention to quality will be the deciding factor in a company’s future success. “Nutraceutical corporations that have taken the time to instill strong quality programs and prepare themselves for the regulations that have come into play are going to do very well in the future,” he said. At the same time, Mr. Murphy believes those companies that have neglected these actions are going to have a very difficult time maintaining their market share, or even maintaining their existence in the context of new regulations.—M.Z.
