Triarco: The Preferred Source
Triarco is about to celebrate its 30th birthday, but before it does it wants to show the world what is has accomplished over the last several years. “We’ve done a lot of things quietly and under the radar in recent years, but now I think it is incumbent upon us to let people know what we’ve been up to,” said Rodger Rohde, Jr., president. And plowing more money back into R&D has been well worth it. Since 2000, the company has been hard at work completing several studies and filing patents for its products. “Research is part of this industry’s future, and it will certainly continue to be woven into the fabric of this company’s future,” Mr. Rohde commented. “At Triarco we not only sell quality botanicals, enzymes and specialty formulations, but we also provide the information, innovation and technology that give our customers a leading edge. The vehicle of the sale happens to be the products we offer, including botanicals, enzymes and other specialty formulations.”
Looking back, Mr. Rohde says protein and carb blockers were pretty hot when the company first started out. The same is true today, although he says the technology used to develop these products has changed. “The ability to deliver a consistent, efficacious product has changed and improved. In other words, we are now able to find the most efficient delivery systems to get these important nutrients into the body,” he said. “Protein, for example, has been big for a long time. Knowing that the protein is doing what it is supposed to do is the difference now.”
A big seller for Triarco is Aminogen, which is a patented enzyme system supported by human and animal studies. It is also pending GRAS (generally recognized as safe) approval. “What we found with our clinicals is that Aminogen doubles the amount of amino acids in the blood when delivered in a whey protein shake. We were also able to show reductions in the levels of C-reactive protein,” said Mr. Rohde.
“We are in the final stages of getting our human clinical trial on Aminogen published.”
Another hot product for the company is Legumase. “The closest thing to Legumase is Beano,” Mr. Rohde said. “While Beano attacks the sugar linkage found in beans, our R&D team approached this a little differently. Since the sugar linkage is found in the middle of food, you may or may not have the enzyme to break down the surrounding food to get to that offending sugar—this is why Beano may not work for everyone.”
Mr. Rohde continued, “We took a more holistic approach with Legumase by building enzymes into the product, so that it not only attacks that sugar linkage, but also the food surrounding the linkage.” So far, Mr. Rohde says the product is doing very well in health food stores and is also receiving a lot of attention from healthcare practitioners.
Also at the top of the list for Triarco is a product called Cranbumycin, which is a cranberry extract geared toward urinary tract health. Besides urinary tract support, however, Mr. Rohde says there are a lot of ancillary benefits, including antioxidant protection. While Cranbumycin is intended for supplement formulations, it is also water-soluble so it may someday find its way into beverages.
According to Mr. Rohde, the future of the nutraceuticals industry will lie on the backs of proven products.
“As a result of the GMPs, there is going to be a lot more dependence on vendors that can perform on a consistent basis and deliver a quality product at a fair price,” he said. “These factors are going to become extremely important and integral to the success of products on the shelf.”
With two state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, Triarco is more than prepared to meet the challenges that lie ahead. Its flagship facility in New Jersey is ISO 9001:2000 certified by both NSF and Underwriters Laboratories. Further, Triarco’s custom-designed 56-acre processing facility, located in South Carolina, is herbal-specific and certified Kosher.—R.W.
