Golden Hope Bioganic: The Home of Tocotrienols

Riding on more than 160 years of experience in plantations, Golden Hope Plantations Berhad (Golden Hope)—one of Malaysia’s largest plantation companies and a key player in the world palm oil market—set its sights on the nutraceuticals industry by forming Golden Hope Bioganic Sdn Bhd (Bioganic), Malaysia, in July of 2003. Shortly thereafter, with the help of a group of experts in the oils and fats business, Bioganic ventured into the tocotrienol business. The product the company is most known for goes by the brand name Gold Tri.E, which contains tocotrienols produced from palm extracts. The product range includes: Gold Tri E 70% concentration; Gold Tri E 50% concentration; Gold Tri E in powder form; and Tri E capsules, which is the company’s “house brand” available in selected pharmacies, hospitals and clinics

According to Golden Hope, toco-trienols have displayed tremendous potential as a powerful antioxidant. In fact, research undertaken by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), previously known as PORIM, as well as independent international authorities and scientists, have shown that it could be highly beneficial in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular, cancer and premature-aging related diseases.

Bioganic’s tocotrienols are extracted from the fruits of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) using a patented process licensed by MPOB to produce superior purity. Tocotrienols are members of the vitamin E family, which is comprised of tocotrienols and tocopherols. The company explains that toco-trienols differ from tocopherols in that they contain three double bonds in the side-chain. Tocotrienols isoprenoid side chain has three double bonds as compared to tocopherol’s saturated side chain. In total, there are four types tocopherols, namely alpha, beta, gamma and delta and four corresponding tocotrienols isomers.

Alpha tocotrienols are 40 to 60 times more potent than normal tocopherols, making it one of the most powerful lipid soluble antioxidants available, and palm oil just so happens to be one of the richest natural sources of toco-trienols. In fact, Bioganic claims that tocotrienols are surprisingly not found in any other vegetable oils, such as soybean oil, canola oil, rapeseed oil or sunflower oil. However, it can be found naturally in other sources like rice bran, barley, wheat germ and oats, but in much lesser quantities.

Palm tocotrienols complex contains a significant amount of D-alpha-tocopherol, D-alpha-tocotrienol, D-gamma-toco-trienol and D-delta-tocotrienol, as compared to most other naturally found vitamin E, which contain mostly tocopherols.
