TNO Nutrition and Food Research Institute recently published an in vivoITAL study regarding calcium absorption from calcium sources in postmenopausal women. The TNO study showed that Puracal® calcium sources from Purac America are highly bioavailable. TNO conducted a study in order to compare true calcium absorption from six different calcium sources, including calcium L-lactate (Puracal PP), calcium lactate gluconate (Puracal Xpro), calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, calcium citrate malate and milk. In addition, the effect of ingestion of a Western or Asian breakfast on calcium absorption from calcium L-lactate was determined. Ten postmenopausal women participated in this in vivo bioavailability study. According to Purac, the TNO study showed that Puracal calcium sources are significantly better absorbed when compared to calcium phosphate. No differences in calcium absorption were found between calcium L-lactate supplement taken with an Asian or Western breakfast. Calcium from Puracal calcium lactate and Puracal calcium lactate gluconate is as bioavailable as calcium from milk and therefore have proven to be good calcium sources for calcium fortification of food.
