Indication: Mild heart failure

Research: Researchers used supplemental hawthorn to treat 143 men and women diagnosed with mild congestive heart failure. The subjects, with an average age of 64 years, took an extract of fresh hawthorn berries or placebo three times daily for eight weeks. Their cardiovascular fitness was assessed by changes in exercise tolerance on a stationary bicycle.
Results: Patients taking the hawthorn extract benefited from significant improvements in exercise tolerance. These patients had an improvement in exercise tolerance, indicating significantly improved cardiovascular performance, compared with those taking placebos.
