New York University professor of internal medicine Steven Lamm, MD, conducted an observational study to determine if cocoa supplementation had a positive effect on cardiovascular health and endothelial function. In the trial 10 patients between the ages of 18-60 (both male and female) were healthy, but had a variety of untreated cardiovascular issues including hypertension, high cholesterol and excessive body weight. According to Dr. Lamm, the trial was initiated because, “We wanted to see if endothelial function could be affected during the 2-month trial using the CocoaWell supplement, which contains 450 mg of pure plant flavanols per 2-capsule dosage. Endothelial cells line the blood vessels and are regulators of blood vessel health.” As a result, over the 60-day period in which patients were seen once a month while taking 2 CocoaWell capsules per day, 8 out of 10 subjects demonstrated an improvement in their endothelial function.
“While the improvement in EndoPAT scores doesn’t necessarily translate into improved clinical outcomes,” explained Dr. Lamm, “the observational study supports the need for more rigorous and placebo-controlled trials.”
