The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) is 25 years old.

Steve Mister, president and CEO of the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) offered perspective about the balance the landmark law struck between accessibility/affordability and safety, as well as how the law has evolved over time.

“For all we talk about DSHEA, it wasn’t locked in stone in 1994,” he said. “As you look back over the last 25 years, there have been evolutions in the law. One of the most notable was the addition of adverse event reporting back in 2006, which was the one area DSHEA really didn’t do a very good job of assuring there was a mechanism in place for post-market surveillance once products were in the marketplace.”

Incremental amendments also included Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) in 2010, and facility registration in 2011.

“I think that should give people comfort that it is possible to continue to tinker with DSHEA moving forward, and it’s not like you’re touching a sacred cow by doing that.”

Mister also discussed issues and aspects of DSHEA that demand resolution moving forward, including New Dietary Ingredient Notification. He suggested mandatory product listing could be a strong step toward increased transparency for consumers and regulators.
