Dr. Wael Massrieh joined Neptune in 2007 and currently holds the position of vice president of scientific affairs. He completed his bachelors of science in microbiology and Immunology at McGill University, where he then pursued his doctorate in medicine, in the division of experimental medicine specializing in proteins that regulate inflammation. His interest in omega-3 research started during his doctorate, after several articles had shown that dietary supplementation rich in omega-3 fatty acids reduces the risk of preterm birth which eventually introduced him to Neptune krill oil and its rich source of a novel generation of phospholipid omega-3 and antioxidants.
Health E-Insights: What is your company’s competitive advantage as it pertains to krill?
Dr. Massrieh: Neptune is the pioneer of this industry and still maintains its position as the supplier of the Gold Standard kill oil. This is largely attributed to Neptune’s patented OceanExtract™ cold extraction process which maximizes the bioactives in Neptune krill oils. Furthermore, Neptune is an ideal position, especially in the US, due to its issued and fully enforceable composition and method of use patents.
Health E-Insights: Has your company felt the effects of having John Elway as an ambassador?
Dr. Massrieh: There has been a lot of excitement about this development, and we have been getting excellent positive feedback. However, this is still the tip of the iceberg since John Elway will be involved in a strategic marketing plan to promote the Neptune Krill oil (NKO®) brand.
Health E-Insights: What is the biggest challenge facing your company?
Dr. Massrieh: Due to a lack of a monograph it has been challenging keeping adulterated fake krill oils of the market. Several companies have launched these types of oils and have been riding of the clinical studies performed with NKO.
Health E-Insights: Where do the great ideas come from in your organization?
Dr. Massrieh: At Neptune working in teams is both necessary and productive. Therefore, the greatest ideas can come from anyone at a director’s to a chief officer’s level.
Health E-Insights: Business wise, what things upset you the most?
Dr. Massrieh: Might sound cliché, but not much upsets me. Time spent being upset is time that could be utilized in finding a solution for unexpected obstacles.

Dr. Massrieh: Omega-3 (EPA+DHA) are some of the most researched natural ingredients on the market. It motivates me knowing that not only are we in this scientifically established and world recognized natural ingredients, but we are also at the forefront of it. Neptune krill oils is the most innovative and novel generation of omega-3 and has a broader spectrum of health benefits, which is attributed to the high amount of phospholipids and antioxidant within it.
