Postbiotics

11.14.22

The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) published a consensus definition for “postbiotics” in May 2021, defining this class of ingredients as: “a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host.”

This definition states that in order to be considered a postbiotic, products may include either whole microbial cells or components of the cells, as long as they have somehow been deliberately inactivated (usually heat-treated).
