Bioiberica’s Collavant n2 native type II collagen ingredient has undergone a self-determined GRAS (generally recognized as safe) process, and can now be marketed in conventional foods and beverages in the U.S.
The company will celebrate the announcement and discuss opportunities for the use of the ingredient in functional foods at IFT First in Chicago from July 14-17.
As part of the GRAS process, one of two ways by which ingredients are introduced into the marketplace, an independent panel of scientists conducted a critical and comprehensive evaluation of the ingredient’s pertinent safety data. The panel, which included professors from the University of Illinois and expert toxicologists, was selected and convened by Bioiberica in accordance with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s guidelines.
The panel unanimously concluded that the use of Collavant n2 in conventional foods is generally recognized as safe (GRAS).
With its newly-obtained GRAS status and clinical studies providing evidence that the ingredient plays a beneficial role in joint health, Collavant n2 can offer brands a means of developing innovative joint health products across a variety of formats, such as ready-to-drink shakes, snack bars, and several other applications.
“Obtaining self-determined GRAS status for Collavant n2 is a very exciting milestone, both for us and our North American customers,” said Antonio Vendrell, marketing and communication director. “For years we’ve seen the positive impact of our ingredient in the nutraceutical industry and dietary supplement space, with its low daily dose of just 40 milligrams, neutral sensory properties, and evidence-backed, immune-mediated mechanism of action. We’re delighted to now offer these benefits to functional food and beverage brands, and work with them to craft exceptional, collagen-enriched products that speak to the modern health and wellness movement, as well as today’s busy lifestyles.”
At IFT First, at booth 2025 in the South Building, Bioiberica will exhibit branded ingredients in collaboration with its U.S. partner, Lugo Nutrition, Inc. In addition to Collavant n2, the company will also showcase its hyaluronic acid matrix ingredients, Mobilee for muscle health and Dermial for skin health.
