An elderberry extract marketed as ElderCraft by Artemis International may have prebiotic activity, according to a study appearing in the Journal of Personalized Medicine.
The polyphenol-standardized extract made from European Black Elderberry was administered to 30 human participants who took 300 mg twice a day for six weeks. The authors concluded that ElderCraft European Black Elderberry Extract induced positive changes in alpha diversity and beta diversity of the gut microbiota of the participants. It also was linked to elevated and lasting levels of Akkermansia muciniphila, a gut bacteria strain associated with good gut health. No adverse events were reported.
“It is becoming increasingly evident that polyphenols have strong prebiotic effects on the human gut microbiota,” said Melanie Bush, vice president of science and research at Artemis International. “This is consistent with increased understanding in the immune health space about the important relationship between gut health and immune health. Other studies have illustrated the immune-boosting and direct anti-viral benefits of ElderCraft. Now, this ELDERGUT study provides additional insight about the gut health angle of ElderCraft’s immune benefits, further demonstrating its unique multifunctionality.”
According to Leslie Gallo, Artemis president, the new findings provide an inroad for customers to create new immune support products which also target gut health.
