Gadot Biochemical Industries, an Israel-based supplier specializing in mineral ingredients, recently launched a new bone support ingredient called Cal2Mag, a combination of calcium citrate and magnesium citrate. The mineral blend is substantiated by clinical studies to offset risks of arterial calcification which are associated with supplementing with calcium as a standalone mineral.
“Without magnesium, calcium supplements can cause a negative effect of vascular calcification, depositing itself on the aortic wall, kidneys, arteries and cartilage rather than in bones where it has the greatest benefit,” Ohad Cohen, CEO of Gadot, said. “Balancing calcium with the right amount of magnesium is good for potentially mitigating those harmful issues.”
Some forms of the minerals are more effective and preferable for certain formulations than others, Cohen added. Gadot prefers citrates as their absorption rates aren’t effected by co-consumption with other foods, and they have a high mineral concentration, neutral flavor, low interference with other minerals, and high compatibility with other nutrients.
Cal2Mag is a composition of calcium and magnesium in highly bioavailable forms, in an optimized ratio of 100mg calcium citrate and 50 mg magnesium citrate per gram of the ingredient. This amounts to 10% of the recommended daily intake (RDI) of calcium and 14% of the RDI for magnesium in a single gram.
The ingredient is made with a unique granulation process, which can prevent segregation of the powder mixture constituents, improve flow properties of the mixture, improve compaction characteristics of the mix, and eliminate excessive amounts of dust particles, Gadot reports.
