A patented complex of bonded arginine silicate, marketed as Nitrosigine by Nutrition21, was linked in a recent double-blind placebo-controlled study to multiple cognitive benefits. The study, appearing in Nutrients, was designed to evaluate Nitrosigine's potential benefits in domains of memory, attention, language, processing speed, and other areas.
16 participants between the ages of 18 and 28 participated in two separate trials, each of which was approximately three hours in length. Three cognitive tests were performed during each assessment – the RBANS (Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status), Digital Image Pairs, and the Digital Symbol Match. The results were recorded both for a baseline, as well as after consuming a single dose of 1.5 grams of Nitrosigine or a placebo. After the first trial was completed, the second trial took place a week later.
The results of the trials suggested that Nitrosigine improved the immediate memory performance of the participants, compared to the placebo group between trials. Introducing Nitrosigine also maintained delayed memory scores in the experimental group, while these scores decreased in the placebo group. There was also an 11% increase in RBANS scores in the Nitrosigine group, with no significant changes in the placebo group, and memory scores in particular showed a 27% increase in the Nitrosigine group.
The authors of the study concluded that supplementation with this ingredient by the participants was correlated with enhanced memory scores, however, no significant differences were detected in other domains such as attention, processing speed, recognition memory, language, and visuospatial skills. “However, it should be noted that a minimal but clinically meaningful difference was observed for immediate memory, delayed memory, and global cognition,” the authors wrote.
“The results of this study further aligned with previous findings that show how administering Nitrosigine can improve mental focus, memory, and acuity due to an increase in NO levels,” Danielle Greenberg, PhD, FACN, vice president of scientific affairs for Nutrition21, said.
Increasing nitric oxide (NO) availability has been shown in a plethora of previous research to enhance vasodilation, blood flow, exercise performance, and mental acuity, Nutrition21 noted.
