The American Botanical Council (ABC) announced its most recent participant in its Adopt-an-Herb program, a resource which provides biological and clinical research surrounding a number of herbs and botanicals on its HerbMedPro database.
Natural Remedies adopted Andrographis, ABC announced, ensuring that the resource on this plant remains up-to-date for researchers, health professionals, industry members, students, consumers, and other members of the herbal and dietary supplement communities. So far, 64 companies have adopted a total of 72 herbs through the program.
Andrographis is a critically endangered herb native to southern Asian countries, and is used in a wide range of traditional medicine systems, often used in response to a number of cold and flu conditions. In vitro studies have found that Andrographis exhibits a number of properties which can modulate inflammatory response, serve as an antioxidant, an antimicrobial, and anti-tumor agent in very specific settings. Most research on this herb centers around its effect on digestive and respiratory conditions.
HerbMedPro currently provides access to important scientific and clinical research data on the uses and health effects of more than 265 herbs, spices, medicinal plants, and fungi.
“We are happy to be associated with ABC by adopting Andrographis paniculata, one of the best-known medicinal plants in the Ayurvedic system for immunity and inflammation,” Deepak Mundkinajeddu, PhD, head of research and development at Natural Remedies, said. “Scientific publications on this plant have risen significantly during this decade, covering various aspects such as clinical studies, mechanisms of action, and agronomy research.”
“AP-Bio, also known as KalmCold, is derived from Andrographis and is clinically tested for its immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties,” Mundkinajeddu said, referencing Natural Remedies’ Andrographis extract. “It is time to spread knowledge on the plant’s immune health benefits as customers explore various natural immune health solutions.”
