Vitamin Angels U.S., a public health and nutrition organization delivering evidence-based dietary interventions to nutritionally vulnerable, underserved populations globally, has announced a partnership with Vitamin Angels U.K., to deliver supplemental food packages free of charge to select nurseries in the U.K. for children who are at nutritional risk.
“One in four children in the U.K. grow up at risk for food insecurity,” Ann Micka, senior program manager for Vitamin Angels U.K., said. “We are grateful to be an official program partner of Vitamin Angels U.S. so that together we can improve nutrition for young children in the U.K. who need it most.”
The nurseries will receive weekly deliveries of self-selected fruits, vegetables, and protein-rich foods, in a package designed to contribute to a quality diet consistent with early childhood nutritional recommendations in England. It complements existing nutrition services and aims to reduce the prevalence of inadequate micronutrient intakes, and excessive intakes of salt and saturated fat.
Vitamin Angels currently serves over 400 children from low-income families, who could benefit from access to better nutrition through the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA). By the end of 2020, Vitamin Angels U.K. will double their program efforts and launch a nutrition education program in which nutritional resources will be distributed via print and digital media to NDNA’s network of over 6,000 nurseries in the U.K.
“At our core, we believe that every child deserves a chance at a healthy life,” Howard Schiffer, Vitamin Angels U.S. founder and president, said. “Our program partnership with Vitamin Angels U.K. will allow us to give the gift of nutrition to even more children and help build the foundation for healthy futures.”
