FrieslandCampina Ingredients, a global nutraceutical and functional ingredients supplier, has launched Biotis SleepWell, the first concept to be unveiled within the cognitive support category in the Biotis brand of products.

Biotis brand was launched earlier this year, and the brand features gut support, sleep, and mood ingredients formulated to cater to a variety of life stages, the company said.

Up to 30% of consumers worldwide report regular sleep disturbance, according to market research company FMCG Gurus, and the coronavirus pandemic is exacerbating the issue. Consumers have been gravitating toward natural remedies as a means of avoiding pharmaceutical interventions, however, FrieslandCampina reports that a major barrier is a lack of consumer trust in herbal solutions.

Biotis SleepWell is a differentiated formulation whose active ingredient is GOS (galacto-oligosaccharides), a prebiotic ingredient with a strong body of research behind it, the company reports. The balance of gut microbiota has been shown to impact human health, including aspects of mood and sleep. GOS is combined with protein-containing amino acids, including tryptophan and cysteine, both of which are derived from milk protein, as well as complementary vitamins and minerals, to target several sleep and mood mechanisms at once via the gut-brain axis.

The ingredient is designed to be taken just before bedtime, and can be incorporated into beverage, shot, or powder applications, and is designed to support falling asleep, sleeping through the night, and waking up refreshed, the company said.

“We call Biotis a new era in ingredient science,” Vicky Davies, global marketing director of Performance, Active, and Medical Nutrition at FrieslandCampina Ingredients, said. “We’re so excited about the potential for our premium galacto-oligosaccharides. This ingredient has a long-established presence in the infant nutrition space, and now it’s time for adults to experience the benefits of GOS, too. In June, we launched Biotis Gut health, the first in the range, and over the next few months, new Biotis health benefit solutions will reveal how GOS and our other key science-backed ingredients can leveraged in unique combinations to support maternal health, immune health, and more.”

“We will continue to believe in and champion the power of science,” Jouke Veldman, head of the Biotis SleepWell team at FrieslandCampina Ingredients, said. “Biotis SleepWell has shown statistically significant improvements in sleep quality, both in several consumer trials and more recently in clinical trials, and there is even more research forthcoming. It’s a uniquely multi-faceted, versatile ingredient which represents what Biotis stands for as a whole – going one step further in developing solutions that expertly respond to both human health needs and consumer wellness preferences over the course of life.”
