The GMP for Sport Program supports NSFs New Athletic Banned Substances Certification Program. GMP for Sport is an independent registration that demonstrates a manufacturers compliance with GMPs. Outlined in Section 8 of NSF/ANSI Standard 173 for Dietary Supplements, GMPs verify that guidelines exist for the following processes:
personal issues,
plant and grounds maintenance/sanitation,
laboratory operations,
sourcing and traceability,
equipment design and maintenance,
quality assurance issues,
health claims, and
production/process controls.
Additional requirements for the NSF GMP for Sport Program include:
two annual GMP for Sport auditsensures ongoing conformance to GMP requirements;
manufacturer affidavitsvalidates that manufacturers do not source, purchase or inventory any component contained on the banned substances list; and
active ingredient supplier affidavitsoffered to suppliers that participate in the NSF Athletic Banned Substances Certification Program.
Kathleen Jordan, MS, RD, general manager of NSFs Dietary Supplements and Functional Foods Certification Program said, The new program addresses sports nutrition manufacturers concerns about banned substances by helping them comply with additional GMP requirements, thereby increasing their credibility and offering them a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
Companies that comply with all requirements of the NSF GMP for Sport Program will be issued a plaque and listed on the NSF website, www.nsf.org/Certified/GMP. They will also be able to use the NSF GMP for Sport logo in advertising and collateral material.
Manufacturing facilities that receive GMP for Sport Registration that are also pursuing product certification through NSFs Dietary Supplements Certification Program will not need to undergo an additional GMP facility audit.
